STMicroelectronics acquires edge AI software specialist Cartesiam

China, May 21, 2021 – STMicroelectronics (ST; NYSE: STM), a global leader in semiconductors serving multiple Electronic applications, announced that it has entered into a merger agreement with Cartesiam, Inc. to acquire its corporate assets, including intellectual property portfolio), mobilizing and integrating staff. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval.

Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Toulon, France, Cartesiam is a software company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) development tools that enable Arm®-based microcontrollers with machine learning and inference capabilities. Today, there are billions of products using Cartesiam technology. The company’s development team consists of data scientists and embedded signal processing experts with extensive experience in developing standard and custom solutions. NanoEdge™ AI Studio is its patented flagship solution that enables embedded system designers without AI knowledge to rapidly develop dedicated software libraries to directly integrate machine learning algorithms into various application systems. Devices incorporating Cartesiam technology are already in mass production worldwide, including IoT devices, home appliances and industrial equipment.

Through this acquisition, STMicroelectronics can strengthen the strategic connotation of artificial intelligence, enhance the strength of the technology portfolio, and meet the various needs of the market for embedded machine learning. The NanoEdge™ AI Studio solution complements and complements ST’s STM32Cube.AI tool, giving customers additional flexibility to integrate machine learning models within their own solutions.

Claude Dardanne, President of STMicroelectronics’ Microcontrollers and Digital IC Business Unit, said: “Regardless of size and industry, customers will place a high value on developing smart solutions using artificial intelligence. The STM32Cube.AI software enables customers to port pre-trained artificial intelligence. Neural network, running on the broad portfolio of STM32 microcontrollers. Adding Cartesiam’s machine learning technology to ST’s existing solutions brings the best edge AI solutions on the market to customers looking to add innovative features to their products combination of plans.”
