Renesas Electronics Announces Joining the AVCC Alliance to Accelerate the Development of Autonomous Vehicles

On October 30, 2019, Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), the world’s leading semiconductor solutions provider, announced today that it has joined the AVCC Consortium (Autonomous Vehicle Computing Consortium) as its core member. Renesas Electronics and automotive ecosystem leaders including OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers and other semiconductor manufacturers have joined hands to help solve the most significant challenges faced by autonomous vehicles in the process of mass production.

With the continuous development of the Internet of Vehicles in the automotive industry, automobiles are becoming more intelligent, environmentally friendly and economical. Looking to the future, self-driving cars will use more complex and large-scale artificial intelligence-driven software. The vehicle edge computing platform will meet the power, heat dissipation, size, and safety requirements, while playing a key role in achieving the required ultra-high performance computing. Therefore, the development of a standardized technical framework is essential for sharing, reusing, and gradually improving the development process promoted by the automotive ecosystem.

On October 8, 2019, leading automotive and technology industry manufacturers including Arm, Bosch, Continental, DENSO, General Motors, Nvidia, NXP Semiconductors and Toyota jointly announced that they will join forces to help accelerate safer and more economical autonomous driving Mass delivery of cars.

Masaya Yoshida, vice president of Renesas Electronics Automotive System Development Division, said: “To realize the future of mobility, we must fully explore and define the requirements that meet the actual application, develop the corresponding technology, and finally implement it on mass-produced vehicles. The AVCC alliance is realizing the future. We play an important role in travel, and we are honored to be able to participate in the construction of the vehicle edge computing framework, combining our popular and proven R-Car SoC with this new framework to jointly lead the development of autonomous vehicles.”

Massimo Osella (General Motors), Chairman of the AVCC Alliance, said: “The AVCC Alliance welcomes Renesas Electronics as a core member and looks forward to their unique technology and expertise as an automotive semiconductor supplier.”
