Ren Zhengfei: Huawei is temporarily ahead in 5G, and hopes to deepen cooperation with Japanese companies (full interview attached)

Today, the Huawei Voice Community released the summary of Ren Zhengfei’s interview with Kyodo News on October 16, 2019.

Ren Zhengfei said in an interview that in 5G, due to its early investment and large investment, Huawei is temporarily ahead. This is only temporary. Huawei is also simultaneously launching research on 6G, because 6G uses high frequency, wide bandwidth and weak coverage. It has not been used as the main force for the time being. The use of 6G may take ten years later. Huawei’s success in 5G is also inseparable from the contribution of Japanese companies, and Huawei will continue to purchase Japanese devices in large quantities.

Ren Zhengfei also said that he is not worried that the US entity list poses a threat to Huawei’s survival, but he is still worried about whether Huawei will still be an advanced company in three to five years.

The following is the full text of Ren Zhengfei’s interview with Kyodo News on October 16:

Ren Zhengfei: Thank you for coming. First of all, I expressed my sympathy for Typhoon Hagibis that hit Japan, and my condolences to the affected people. At the same time, congratulations to Akira Yoshino for winning the Nobel Prize! Akira Yoshino’s 38 years of obscure research spirit is worth learning from Huawei. If Chinese scientists can tirelessly study one thing for 38 years, it is possible to make the country better.

I have a very good impression of Japan as a country, and it is also a place that other members of our family like very much. Many spirits of the Japanese people are worth learning from. I’m happy to interview you today, you can ask any questions you want, don’t be afraid to be too sharp.

1. Tatsumi Zhier, Director of Kyodo News China General Bureau: Thank you, Mr. Ren, for accepting our interview during his busy schedule. The first time I met someone from Huawei was in Shanghai in 2012, when I was in charge of the Shanghai branch. I attended the press conference of Huawei Shanghai Research Institute in Shanghai. At that time, I didn’t know Huawei at all. It was the first time I realized that China has such a large and private enterprise.

After that, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to communicate with Huawei people all the time. If my memory serves me correctly, Scott, an American, was the media affairs minister of Huawei headquarters at that time. At that time, Huawei just developed a mobile phone prototype, and he was happy to introduce it to us. Since then, I have been very concerned about Huawei, and I always wanted to have the opportunity to interview President Ren. Today, I am very happy and honored to see that Huawei mobile phones are popular all over the world, and I have also realized the dream of interviewing President Ren. Please take care.

Ren Zhengfei: I am very glad that you visited our Shanghai Institute. It was an accidental decision for us to make mobile phones. When we sold 3G to the world, the system could not be sold without mobile phones, so we learned to make mobile phones. How big were the earliest 3G mobile phones? Toyota Coaster in Japan, a Coaster can only hold one mobile phone, that is to say, all parts add up to fill a Coaster, turn around on the road in Shanghai, to test our base station; then we will make this “Coaster mobile phone” step by step. Small, to achieve today’s level, has taken a long road of more than ten years. On mobile phones, we should have more failures than successes in the early days. We have gone through a lot of twists and turns. Now a little success does not mean very successful, so we have to work hard.

Our Japan Institute and Japanese companies have good cooperation on mobile phones. The biggest feature of the Japanese people is that they are good at making many things very delicate, and the mobile phone needs to be made very small. This is Japan’s advantage. Therefore, we have a large investment in Japan and strengthen cooperation with Japanese companies.

2. Tatsumi Chi 2: Regarding the issue of the Sino-US trade war, at present, there is no specific result of the Sino-US trade war. There is a saying that China and the United States have entered a new Cold War. What do you think of this? Has China and the US entered a new Cold War or will it enter a new Cold War in the future even though it has not entered yet? What do you think?

Ren Zhengfei: I don’t think we will enter a new Cold War. As the United States continues to close itself, China is opening up step by step, and when the United States is closed, China is even more open. A Cold War will only occur when both countries want to close themselves, but there will be no Cold War when they are open. The United States needs China’s market, and if it lacks a portion of that market, it will affect its economy. Taking automobiles as an example, the current car ownership in China is 400 million. If it is updated every ten years on average, the annual demand for cars is between 40 million and 50 million. In the auto industry, China has set a timetable for further opening up in the next five years last year. The auto industry can be wholly owned and not transfer technology, and the tariffs will continue to drop in the five years, and will eventually be reduced to a very low level. European cars are high-end cars, and Japanese cars are high-quality cars. The Chinese people welcome and like them very much. American cars are mainly reflected in the fact that they are large and consume a lot of fuel. The United States should actively strive for Chinese people to buy its cars. As a result, the trade war has also imposed a 25% tariff on its cars. It is difficult for American cars to compete with Japanese cars without tariffs. Would it be more difficult after the 25% tariffs? If the U.S. government wants to understand it in a few years and then open it up, the Chinese market has already been occupied by European and Japanese cars. It is impossible for the United States to withdraw from globalization, and it still needs the Chinese market.

In the past two days, China’s financial industry has opened up to a large extent. As long as China maintains an open stance, globalization cannot be divided into two groups. Now the two countries have some disputes in the trade war, which can be resolved through negotiation. China and Japan have handled this issue relatively well. In recent years, there have been conflicts between China and Japan. The Japanese government has always separated politics and economics. There are political conflicts, but the economy is hot. It is believed that after President Xi’s visit to Japan next year, China-Japan relations will reach a new height, politically warmed up, and economic cooperation with great development.

There is a very large complementary relationship between China and Japan. China has certain system integration capabilities, and Japan has very good material science and precision manufacturing processes. The combination of the two can form a very good product. I have always hoped that China, Japan and South Korea will form a free trade area. The three countries are industrial countries and can complement each other’s advantages. China-Japan-Korea is an industrial free trade area, lacking agricultural products, ASEAN said, “I will also join in, I can provide agricultural products, I will buy your industrial products”, so the China-Japan-Korea Free Trade Area will be combined with ASEAN. . Europe said, “You have such a large sector and such a large population, we also want to come in and sell something”, and the EU will also join the trade area. If the China-Japan-Korea Free Trade Area and the ASEAN Agricultural Free Trade Area are added to the EU’s trade area, what is missing? energy. Countries in the Middle East and Central Asia have said, “There are so many of you and the economy is so developed. We will ship oil and natural gas to you.” In this way, the Eurasian plate is formed, which will definitely support us from the crisis of economic recession. But the most important thing here is the relationship between China and Japan. By resolving conflicts and uniting, China and Japan can play a core connecting role in this region. I very much hope that when President Xi visits Japan, he and Prime Minister Abe can reach a very good consensus.

3. Tatsumi Chi 2: Now when it comes to 5G, in fact, the contradiction between China and the United States is mainly the competition for high-tech hegemony. Which company can represent China’s IT field now? It should be Huawei. Do you agree with the argument that there is a battle for technological supremacy in the market?

Ren Zhengfei: I don’t agree with the battle for technological supremacy, because globalization is interdependent, and a company that makes a product alone will definitely fall behind. The second law of thermodynamics talks about “entropy increase”. A closed system does not exchange material energy with the outside world, and if it does not break the balance, the entropy will continue to increase, and finally it will fall into entropy death. I am not in favor of taking the road of complete self-reliance. Through the global division of labor and cooperation, the best components from various companies should be integrated into the best products for mankind. If each component has to be made by itself, it is impossible to integrate into the best product. We can survive the crisis of supply cuts in the United States with our own parts now, but we cannot guarantee that we will still be the most advanced or leading in three to five years. Therefore, we must rely on the global division of labor and cooperation to achieve this goal. Continue to advance. Japan has a particularly good place, the United States has a particularly good place, Europe has a particularly good place, and China has a certain amount of effort. Together, we can become the best thing in the world. Therefore, the world must adhere to the path of globalization without wavering.

I’m not worried now that the US Entity List poses an existential threat to Huawei, but I have some concerns about whether Huawei will still be an advanced company in three to five years. Therefore, we firmly rely on globalization, and hope that Chinese scientists, like Mr. Yoshino Akira, will work tirelessly to conquer one point for 38 years and provide advanced elements to enable us to move forward. The reason why the United States is so great is that it has attracted talents from all over the world to the United States to innovate with its advanced culture, advanced system and strict property rights protection. And this kind of innovation is the accumulation of hundreds of years and decades. The accumulation of such a huge country in a country is very fertile. The United States said that in a few years, it will make better equipment than us, which I fully believe is possible. I am worried that after our company has survived the crisis of survival, everyone thinks that Huawei can continue to do well, which is impossible. Therefore, I firmly support the path of globalization and do not promote self-isolation.

4. Tatsumi Chi 2: A question about the entity list and Sino-US relations. If the United States maintains the “entity list” in the future, does the United States want to achieve decoupling from China? The Chinese government also has a view on whether the United States should consider decoupling from China. Do you think the situation of decoupling or separation between China and the United States will remain for a certain period of time in the future?

Ren Zhengfei: In my opinion, China and the United States will not be decoupled in science and technology, but will still depend on each other. The entity list will not be revoked, only Huawei is blocked, and other companies can still buy American things. Huawei’s energy is not enough to change the trajectory of globalization. There are also many companies that are not sanctioned, pushing the path of globalization forward. Huawei is just a small “grain of rice” in the process of economic development, and its impact on society will not be so great. I also hope that society will not split with the United States because of its sympathy for Huawei. We have been hit, and others who have not been hit take the opportunity to develop well.

Tomoji Tatsumi: There is a saying in society now that if a new Cold War is truly entered into and the relationship between China and the United States is truly decoupled, there will be two economic circles in the world: one dominated by China, and the other dominated by the United States Economic Circle. If according to your statement, do you think this phenomenon will not happen?

Ren Zhengfei: I don’t think so. History has proven that closing will lead to backwardness, and only opening can advance. A few politicians want to decouple, but many companies are reluctant to decouple, because if they are decoupled, they will sell less, so how can they accept it? Everyone wants to sell more airplanes, more cars, and more Electronic components, but no manufacturer says “I want to sell less.” The purpose of running a business is to sell more products. As long as some people want to sell and some people want to buy, they can’t get off the hook.

5. Tomoji Tatsumi: In the 1960s and 1970s, Japan was in a stage of rapid economic growth. Many Japanese companies had the slogan: As a company, we must catch up with the United States and surpass the United States. Mr. Ren, do you have any idea that Huawei wants to surpass or catch up with the United States?

Ren Zhengfei: It can only be said that we surpass a certain company in the United States in a certain aspect, and it is impossible to surpass a country in the United States. It’s possible that we can only have a little breakthrough in a certain area because of how strong the United States is and how rich the technological resources are.

6. Tatsumi Chi 2: Regarding the issue of 5G and future communications, now that the world has entered the 5G era, and even considering 6G after 5G, what changes will China or Huawei take in it? What role does Huawei play in the 5G society?

Ren Zhengfei: In 5G, due to Huawei’s early investment and strong investment, we are temporarily ahead. This is only temporary. We are also simultaneously starting research on 6G, because 6G uses high frequency, wide bandwidth and weak coverage. It has not been used as the main force for the time being. The use of 6G may take ten years later. Our success in 5G is also inseparable from the contribution of Japanese companies, and we will continue to purchase Japanese devices in large quantities.

Tatsumi Zhiji: You just said that 6G will take about ten years. Do you mean that 6G can be commercialized in ten years?

Ren Zhengfei: Maybe even faster, this is just my conservative estimate. In a country like Japan with very developed optical fiber communication, if 6G is only used as an access system, not as a wireless mobile communication market, 6G may be used in advance. In fact, for Huawei, we are now very worried that such a large bandwidth of 5G will not be used up, and we have to seek even more bandwidth. Will it be even more inexhaustible? It is still necessary to judge how much people’s demand for bandwidth is based on the real use of 5G in society. With the development of society, people’s needs will increase, and new technologies can only be applied if people have needs. No one uses technologies that are ahead of people’s needs, and they are easily starved to death.

7. Tatsumi Chi 2: Now it is said that 5G and AI are strongly related. If we say 6G, the 6G era will be more widely used. Now that the use of mobile phones is so common in the 4G era, do you think that the way of life of human beings will change in the future?

Ren Zhengfei: The change in human life style is actually unimaginable to me. The speed of the development of the information society is really too fast. Let’s not forget that a few years ago or earlier, it was very painful for you to be a reporter. It took two days and two nights to transmit information using a 64K telecommunication system, but now it is transmitted in one second. At that time, when we surfed the Internet, we had to connect the telephone line at home. An invention of Jobs realized the mobile Internet. The development of the Internet was like a volcanic eruption, and a single invention had such a big impact. Therefore, the combination of 5G and artificial intelligence will definitely promote great progress in society, but I can’t imagine the extent of progress.

Tatsumi Zhiji: Do you think that in the future 5G and AI era, it is possible to discover revolutionary innovations or inventions such as Jobs’ mobile Internet, and it is possible that Huawei will make such inventions?

Ren Zhengfei: I think the impact of artificial intelligence in the future will be greater than that of Steve Jobs’ mobile Internet, but this invention is not necessarily Huawei.

Tatsumi Zhiji: You mentioned that 5G and 6G have made great contributions to the development of the world. What direction do you think Huawei will take in the future? Will it help the popularization of 5G and 6G?

Ren Zhengfei: After the massive data comes out, there must be transmission and grooming. Huawei still focuses on the dredging, distribution, storage and processing of information traffic, and will not leave these links.

8. Tatsumi Chi 2: The world generally believes that Huawei is very powerful in technology, and can even lead various developments in global technology. Now there is a view that the reason why the United States is attacking Huawei is that it needs to weaken Huawei to suppress Huawei, and even suppressing Huawei can suppress China’s development in the future. What do you think of this statement?

Ren Zhengfei: From the point of view of suppression, it is actually helping us. Because employees are afraid of the death of the company, they work hard, and our sales revenue in the first three quarters increased by 24.4%. From this point of view, suppression cannot curb one’s efforts.

9. Tatsumi Chi 2: Four days ago, China and the United States reached a certain agreement on trade negotiations. For example, the increase in tariffs originally scheduled to start on October 15 has been delayed, and a certain agreement has been reached on agricultural products. But the issue of Huawei’s export ban was not mentioned in this trade negotiation. What do you think of this?

Ren Zhengfei: I don’t think anyone in the US government will stand up to speak for us about the ban on Huawei’s exports. It is unlikely to ask for a change in the ban. If any member of the US Congress speaks for Huawei, he will definitely be accused by other members. On the issue of containing Huawei, the United States is still relatively unified, so we are ready for the long-term irrevocation of the Entity List.

10. Tatsumi Zhiji: Before the interview, I read the book “Will Huawei Fall Next” written by Teacher Tian Tao. It is mentioned in the book that Mr. Ren predicted some conflicts between Huawei and European and American companies in the future in 2003. Do you think the current conflict is the one that was foreseen in 2003? It has been 15 years since 2003. What kind of preparations has Huawei made?

Ren Zhengfei: In fact, the conflict that arises today is much more serious than we imagined. The United States itself has the Wassenaar Agreement and the management of Category 00 materials, and has already controlled that American technology cannot be used by other countries for military use. We are making products for civilian enterprises. We were worried that the United States would expand the scope of the control list. We could not buy parts, so we made some special parts ourselves. Today, it seems that we are far from imagining that the US attack will be so severe and severe. It is still very heavy for us to bear such a big stick.

11. Tatsumi Chi 2: You just mentioned that the US has a relatively unified domestic opinion on the export ban on Huawei and the Entity List. Why is there a consensus in the US on this?

Ren Zhengfei: I think their politicians are unified, but they do not say that enterprises are unified.

Tatsumi Chi 2: There are two major political parties in the United States, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Now both parties have a relatively unified view. Why do politicians have a relatively unified view?

Ren Zhengfei: I don’t know. Just like when Japan reached its peak in the 1970s and 1980s and almost bought the world, the United States wanted to suppress Japan. Later, they believed that the Soviet Union’s military power was too strong, and they wanted to attack the Soviet Union, causing the Soviet Union to disintegrate into 16 countries. Now the United States believes that China will be like Japan and the Soviet Union back then, so it also wants to suppress China, and wants China to develop slower. But they didn’t expect that only when China develops, there will be more money to buy American airplanes, American cars, American grains and other products. If China’s economy really collapses, it will also drag down the American economy. .

12. Tatsumi Chi 2: You just mentioned that the “entity list” will be maintained for a long time, and you also mentioned that Huawei will help popularize 5G in the future, and even a conservative view will see the future of 6G in ten years. Regarding the development of 5G and 6G, will the US suppression this time have a negative impact, or is there any way for Huawei to overcome the negative impact?

Ren Zhengfei: We need to invest more in basic research and theoretical research to make up for the difficulties of some new theories and technologies that we cannot buy from the world, and keep pace with the world.

Tomoji Tatsumi: Even if the United States does not export related components and technologies to Huawei for a long time in the future, can Huawei maintain such a pace of growth?

Ren Zhengfei: The United States does not export, and there are many countries such as Europe, Japan, etc.

Tatsumi Zhiji: You just mentioned basic research or theoretical research. Some universities and research institutions in the United States have stopped research cooperation with Huawei. Will this affect basic research and theoretical research?

Ren Zhengfei: There are still many universities in the world, and it is not just the United States that has good universities.

Tatsumi Chiji: Now the United States has various technologies or products, such as some semiconductors and operating systems, such as Google products and Qualcomm chips. Do you think that even without these things, 5G can still continue to develop. Can you understand it this way?

Ren Zhengfei: Yes.

Tomoji Tatsumi: Now some people think that this is a disguised decoupling or separation, although the United States may not try to achieve such an effect. In the future, only the technology owned by China or only the technology owned by the United States will realize two technology circles, and even exist in China And the two economic circles in the United States, do you think there is such a possibility?

Ren Zhengfei: No. If the chips made by Qualcomm cannot communicate with the chips made by Huawei, then one person will have to bring two mobile phones. You see, it was very difficult to export files from mobile phones in the past, but now it is very fast, because there is a unified standard. Therefore, two standards and three standards are retarding the progress of the world. Some politicians may think so, but people will not choose to take this road.

13. Muli Xiaoliang, Director of the Shanghai Branch of Kyodo News: Two questions: First, Germany officially announced this morning that Germany will not exclude Huawei from 5G. What do you think? Second, the Japanese government decided to exclude Huawei at a very early stage, and it did not pass the verification results, so it had to exclude Huawei from the beginning. What do you think about this?

Ren Zhengfei: First of all, we very much welcome the fact-based approach of Germany and the EU, which has put forward higher security standards for all suppliers, rather than arbitrarily excluding manufacturers from participating in 5G construction. I am very supportive of the European digital sovereignty strategy, because in the past our wealth was minerals, agricultural products, etc., which had a lot to do with how much land we owned. This is called geopolitics. The data of the information system has no national borders and can fly all over the world. If a country determines digital sovereignty, it establishes its national sovereignty on the wealth of information. We very much support and support the practice of Germany and the EU. The way of operation of this practice is that a company must promise not to do bad things in advance, and then audit whether it has done bad things afterwards. If it does not do any bad things, it is a good company. Judgments are based on facts rather than subjective judgments.

Second, as for the Japanese government, we can understand it. It is their right for customers to choose what kind of goods in what way, and we also sell goods. Just because it is Hermes, everyone must buy it.

14. Tomoji Tatsumi: Regarding Huawei’s situation in the Japanese mobile phone market, Huawei’s smartphones are very popular in Japan. If it is said that Huawei’s mobile phones will not have Google’s operating system in the future, the Japanese people will not necessarily choose the new Huawei mobile phones that will come out in the future. Individual users are also very concerned about this. Does Huawei have any countermeasures or views?

Ren Zhengfei: We can understand that some consumers may not choose Huawei mobile phones for a period of time, but we will work hard to change the status quo.

Tatsumi Zhiji: Is the direction of your efforts to build your own operating system to develop its ecosystem?

Ren Zhengfei: I’m not sure I can do this right now, but let’s work hard.

Tatsumi Chi 2: 5G and 6G networks will be popularized in the future. Will 5G and 6G terminals appear simultaneously?

Ren Zhengfei: Yes.

Tatsumi Chi 2: My personal terminals are mostly mobile phones, tablet computers, and PCs. Will there be some innovative things in terminals in the future?

Ren Zhengfei: Yes, there will be many terminals in the future, and all of them can be connected without re-importing. How does software give people experience? Just rely on the terminal. Because the software cannot be touched or grasped, it depends on the terminal, and the terminal will be various in the future, not only mobile phones.

Tomoji Tatsumi: The future is unimaginable for us. The first time I lived in Beijing was from 1997 to 2000. A TV station employee said that in theory, there will be something like a smartphone in the future. After shooting a video, it will be transmitted to another mobile phone. At that time, everyone thought He was joking, laughing at him, but after ten years it came true.

Ren Zhengfei: I’ll send you a CD. This CD is the gala for China’s 70th National Day. At that time, tens of thousands of people performed an animation-style gala performance, which was transmitted by our 5G TV station. Your media is very clear that such a big scene cannot be filmed with traditional technology. Tens of thousands of people perform with high quality and rapid changes. You can see everything clearly without any lag. You can experience the application of 5G in radio and television. . When we watched the military parade, we saw some people carrying a small backpack, which was a small base station, with a camera in front of them, and they passed the base station to the central station for editing. Being able to capture and transmit such high-quality images, media professionals will understand what 5G can do.

This is a performance of tens of thousands of people, a fast-changing animation, and the theme expressed is “people’s joy”. 5G is all provided by Huawei.

15. Tomoji Tatsumi: The United States will accuse Huawei of potentially stealing some information from its communications equipment, and even impose a series of sanctions on Huawei on this ground. However, no concrete evidence from the US has been seen so far. May I ask if the United States has directly presented the evidence they obtained to President Ren?

Ren Zhengfei: It should be said that Huawei has been subject to the strictest supervision in the world for more than ten years. Every country will suspect us, every intelligence agency will stare at us, and problems have been discovered early. Huawei’s IT network “city wall” is built with “American bricks”, not against the United States, not against other countries, but only against vicious competitors from stealing our technology. They can see it clearly. So far, there is no evidence to explain our problems.

Tatsumi Chi 2: The society generally believes that the United States or Europe and the United States are very strict with domestic information management. There is a saying that the Chinese government may have access to some relevant information through regulations. There are even claims that Huawei’s untrustworthiness has something to do with the Chinese social system and Chinese social system. What do you think?

Ren Zhengfei: We are an honest businessman, we will fulfill the spirit of being responsible for our customers, and we will never have other incorrect behaviors.

16. Muli Xiaoliang: If I remember correctly, you should celebrate your 75th birthday on October 25th. Although Mr. Ren is a super person, he has not yet achieved immortality. Have you already started to think about the successor? Has it been determined who will be the successor? If there is no set of expectations for the successor in the next ten or twenty years, in order to maintain Huawei’s leading position?

Ren Zhengfei: Our company has no problems with the institutional succession mechanism. The succession is not a designated person, but an institutional succession. I can send you the transcript of my speech at the shareholders’ meeting, which has been made very clear.

I don’t actually have the power at the specific operational level. What I have is a veto power, but I haven’t vetoed it. Originally, the veto expired at the end of last year. We were worried that the company would go wrong as soon as all employees voted in the event of an emergency, so we continued to retain the veto. But it is not me who vetoes alone, nor is it inherited by my family, but from the board members, supervisory board members and senior leaders who have withdrawn from the stage of history, seven people are elected to form a core elite team to have the veto power to ensure that the company does not Disperse in a jiffy.

17. Tatsumi Chi 2: I mentioned the family affairs just now. Is there anything new about Mr. Meng who is currently in Canada?

Ren Zhengfei: We should follow the judicial procedure and solve it step by step.

18. Tatsumi Chi 2: The Chinese government is promoting the “Belt and Road” policy. Has Huawei participated in or supported the “Belt and Road” initiative?

Ren Zhengfei: Huawei has not participated in the “Belt and Road” project, because the “Belt and Road” is all infrastructure construction, the electronic equipment we sell is very small, and there is no contract in the “Belt and Road”.

19. Tatsumi Chi 2: The latest data on the number of Huawei employees is that there are 188,000 people in the world. Has the Sino-US trade war affected the number of employees? Will it decrease?

Ren Zhengfei: The number of employees has increased to 194,000, an increase of several thousand. Because we have to fill a lot of “holes”, we also need more talented people to come in.

Tatsumi Chi 2: Recruitment of new employees is not limited to domestic?

Ren Zhengfei: Global.

Tatsumi Chi 2: Huawei is recruiting around the world, do you pay special attention to some regions? For example, countries such as India are particularly strong in science and technology. Is there any special strengthening?

Ren Zhengfei: We don’t have too many restrictions. The one that has restrictions is the United States. Because American contact with us is not allowed by the U.S. government, and as soon as it comes into contact, it is considered that there may be American elements, so it will intervene. Therefore, it is a great loss for us to not hire such outstanding talents from the United States. Other countries and regions do not have any restrictions.

Tatsumi Chi 2: There are many outstanding Chinese or Chinese people in American universities or research institutions and in areas such as Silicon Valley who are suppressed in the United States. Are there many Chinese in the US who come back to China to join Huawei?

Ren Zhengfei: If you are an international student of Chinese nationality, it is possible; Chinese who have joined the US nationality are restricted, including holding a US green card, all within the jurisdiction of the United States.

20. Tatsumi Zhier: What do you want most now, Mr. Ren? What do you most want to get your hands on?

Ren Zhengfei: Still trust, I hope more people in the world can give us trust. I frequently meet with the media, in fact, I want to convey a message through you, let the society understand us, and remove the veil of our mystery. Originally we didn’t have a veil, but after everyone’s storytelling, they covered us with a veil.

21. Tomoji Tatsumi: We should be the first Japanese media to interview President Ren alone. We are honored and happy to have this opportunity. Does your frank communication with us this time mean that you have high expectations for Japan?

Ren Zhengfei: I have always had great hope for Japan. My daughter’s first foreign language is Japanese and the third foreign language is French.

Tomoji Tatsumi: I heard that you not only come to Japan for work, but also visit Japan frequently personally?

Ren Zhengfei: Yes, to travel.

Tomoji Tatsumi: What do you like specifically in Japan?

Ren Zhengfei: There are too many. I have basically traveled all over Japan. From Kyushu to Hokkaido, I have traveled all over the cities and villages along the way. I often tell you that Japan is the ultimate tourist destination in the world. You don’t need to specify a certain place. You can live in any small mountain village for a long time, because every mountain village is very clean and the ramen is very delicious. .

Tatsumi Zhiji: Does Mr. Ren have any hobbies?

Ren Zhengfei: Work and watch TV shows.

Tatsumi Tomoji: Have you considered coming to Japan together?

Ren Zhengfei: I want to go to Japan anytime.

Tomoji Tatsumi: Do you have any security concerns when visiting Japan personally? Do you have such concerns?

Ren Zhengfei: No worries.

22. Muli Xiaoliang: Huawei has operations in more than 170 countries around the world and has 194,000 employees. Now I see that there are only Chinese members on the board of directors of Huawei, or look at local offices and subsidiaries around the world. Most of the executives are still from China, and there are fewer local executives. In this regard, have you considered introducing more local executive talents to the board of directors or local subsidiaries, so that Huawei can further achieve openness and transparency?

Ren Zhengfei: There are already many local executives. We have more than 30,000 foreign employees, and there are many foreign employees on the board of directors of grassroots subsidiaries. On the board of directors of the head office, the most important thing is to have qualifications. If foreign employees do not come from the grassroots level of Huawei, then entering the board of directors is just a decoration and has no power. Because all the members of the board of directors were appointed by me, not appointed by me, they have their own “mountains”, so they occupy a position.
