NuCurrent to provide NFC wireless charging solution to stylus makers

The Universal Stylus Initiative announced a memorandum of understanding that endorses the NFC Forum’s Wireless Charging Specification (WLC) as the designated method for integrating wireless charging into styluses.

The commitment of these two standards bodies marks an important step towards the mass adoption of NFC wireless charging in consumer electronics, with the NFC Forum ratifying the WLC in May 2020, specifying a transmit power of up to 1W and an accepted power of 500mW.

“This is a major development in wireless charging,” said Tim Tumilty, vice president of sales and marketing at NuCurrent. “We are seeing the standardization of NFC wireless charging across the product category as the preferred method of power transfer. NFC-based charging developed by NuCurrent We expect more announcements like this to follow.”

NuCurrent has been advancing NFC wireless charging technology for the past 18 months. By developing NuEva for the NFC charging development platform, NuCurrent can go beyond the NFC WLC specification to provide up to 3W of received power.

In addition to styluses, NuCurrent’s NFC wireless charging technology is ideal for wireless charging of hearing aids, fitness trackers, sensors, medical devices and other space-constrained products. Additionally, the NFC Forum is promoting “reverse charging” of these devices with NFC in smartphones to unlock exciting applications.

“NFC wireless charging opens up many opportunities for product developers,” Tumilty said. “Up to 3W of wireless power, high data requirements, spatial freedom and design flexibility are just some of the many benefits of this technology.”
