In the low-end mobile phone market, the proportion of 2GB DRAM and below is shrinking, and high-end mobile phones have popularized 8GB or even 12GB capacity. In order to achieve high performance, high-end mobile phones have higher requirements for bandwidth, LPDDR4 has become a common configuration, and LPDDR5 has begun to be used. ARM is pushing the industry to transform to pure 64-bit computing. Starting from 2022, mobile smart terminal high-performance processors will no longer support 32-bit, but only support 64-bit, which will increase the demand for DRAM.

Wang Shuchong said that ARM will spend in 2022 to gradually promote the shift from 32-bit to 64-bit in processors for mobile smart terminals, because in the future. Mobile intelligent terminal equipment will support 64-bit processors in the future, and the demand for DRAM will also increase.

Boost computing and storage trends

In the 5G era, data has exploded to drive up storage demand, and the value of data lies in digging insights, so the concept of computing storage has been born. Based on Arm’s definition, computing storage is to make storage devices smarter so that data can be processed directly where the data is stored.

Wang Shuchong introduced that computing storage not only improves energy efficiency and reduces latency, but also has advantages in privacy protection because the computing takes place locally. Currently, Arm is actively promoting the technology trend of computing and storage.

Arm released the Cortex-R82 processor, which can be used not only for computing storage, but also for 5G modems to control the CPU. Compared with the previous generation, it has been upgraded from 32-bit to 64-bit, and the space has been expanded from 4GB to 1TB, thus doubling the CPU storage performance. On this basis, ARM also supports MMU memory management standards, Linux and other systems, and Neon instruction sets.

Because Cortex-R82 has a memory management unit, memory chip designers will have more flexible choices, either as a real-time controller according to the original storage method, or by extending the MMU to run the Linux operating system . With the blessing of Linux, applications that could only be used in the cloud before can now come to the edge of storage.

“If the Cortex-R82 design chip is used, the MMU can be turned off during peak periods and only storage is performed; during non-peak periods, local storage devices may be required to do some data mining, analysis, and sorting. At this time, we can enable MMU.” Wang Shuchong gave an example.
