Global Smart Home Invention Patent Ranking TOP100 released: Huawei, OPPO on the list

With the rapid development of 5G, AI, and IoT technologies, more and more manufacturers have begun to deploy the smart home ecological chain, and traditional home appliance companies and Internet manufacturers have participated, so the competition has become quite fierce. Recently, industry-related research institutions have released a “2021 Global Smart Home Invention Patent Ranking TOP100”. The list shows that the smart home market has initially formed three camps: traditional home appliance companies, Internet companies, and technology companies.

Judging from the specific rankings, the three traditional home appliance companies, Haier Zhijia, Gree Group, and LG, ranked in the top three respectively, with 4,535, 2,649 and 2,520 related patents. In addition, there are also many seats occupied by technology companies in the list, especially mobile phone manufacturers represented by Huawei and OPPO. With the increase in R&D investment in recent years, the number of patents obtained is also considerable, of which Huawei has 683 patents. Patents ranked 10th, and OPPO ranked 33rd with 237 patents.

In terms of IoT smart home layout, Huawei advocates the “1+8+N” all-scenario smart life strategy. In the strategy, 1 refers to mobile phones, 8 refers to tablets, PCs, wearables, smart screens, AI speakers, headsets, VR, and automotive products, and N refers to Huawei’s smart selection ecological chain products. Among them, 1 and 8 are made by Huawei itself, and N is a partner product, with smartphones and Hongmeng system as the core, and the influence of Huawei’s brand as an enabler, which is continuously extended to the periphery.

And another first-tier mobile phone manufacturer OPPO can also rank among the TOP100, or even the top 50. On the surface, it seems that OPPO only focuses on smartphones, but it is not. As early as two years ago, OPPO proposed the concept of “integration of all things” and released IoT terminal products such as smart watches, wireless headphones, smart TVs, and AR glasses. The initial barriers to entering “smart home devices” were quietly built, so OPPO is well deserved to be on the list with its outstanding products and technologies.

OPPO advocates a people-centered strategic layout of “integration of all things”. The reason why it is “integration” rather than “interconnection” is that it emphasizes that users’ experience in multiple terminals is seamless. At the ODC Developers Conference in 2021, OPPO launched ColorOS, a user-centric ubiquitous service, which provides an active service experience around people’s life scenarios and behavioral habits through powerful perception and interaction capabilities and computing decision-making capabilities.

Taking products as an example, OPPO Reno7 series, smart TV K9, OPPO Watch2 series smart watches and other products are equipped with ColorOS. They bring users a consistent user experience through the layout of full scene integration. For example, you can connect the Reno7 to the smart TV K9, and use the NFC one-key flash projection function to perform screen projection without the network.

Alternatively, the OPPO Watch2 smart watch can be cross-device interconnected with smartphones and other products to achieve Bluetooth calls, health management, watch car control and other operations. These functions are one of the applications of the integration of all things, and they all provide users with a full-scene smart home experience.

While OPPO has a comprehensive layout in the IoT field, the patents it currently holds are also quite eye-catching. As of December 31, 2021, OPPO’s global patent applications exceeded 75,000, and the global number of authorized patents exceeded 34,000. Among them, the number of invention patent applications exceeded 68,000, and invention patent applications accounted for 90% of all patent applications. The number of PCT applications is in the top 8 in the world, and the number of 5G standard essential patents is declared in the top 10 in the world. In addition, OPPO has more than 2,600 global patent applications in the field of AI, mainly in computer vision, speech technology, natural language processing, machine learning, etc., which shows that OPPO’s scientific and technological strength is very strong.

In general, IoT smart home has become a major area of rapid development, and will take over the next innovation growth cycle of the consumer electronics industry in the future. OPPO will be driven by software and hardware integration technology to create diversified value and open a new chapter in the integration of all things. Smarter home products in the future are worth looking forward to.
